Diversifying Economics Globally
Mentoring Opportunities
Call for Mentors, Graduate Applications International Network (Gain)
The Graduate Applications International Network (GAIN) supports African students interested in applying for graduate school in economics or related fields. After the first part of the program in which prospective graduate students attend a webinar series about each aspect of the application process, selected participants graduate into a second part that involves 1-on-1 mentoring to help them complete the application.
Information for students: The next GAIN webinar phase for the 2023-24 application cycle will start in early 2023. The webinar series covers every aspect of the graduate application process and features panel discussions with leading African scholars worldwide. Registration for the webinar phase will open on the program website in early 2023 (https://gain-network.net). Applications for the second phase of the program – the mentoring program – will open in late spring 2023. Students must participate in the webinar phase for progression into the mentoring program.
Information for mentors: The GAIN team is continuously looking for mentors who guide a prospective graduate student through the application process. Specifically, the GAIN team is looking for PhD students, post-docs or faculty members in economics or related fields who can dedicate a few hours per month regularly throughout the application cycle (June to March).
Mentors work with a prospective graduate student throughout the application process, including weekly calls to make sure the student is on track with the relevant deadlines, providing feedback on key aspects of the application, such as personal statements, resumes, and scholarship proposals, etc. Mentors receive support as needed from a community of mentors around the world, as well as from the GAIN leadership team.
