Kampala, Uganda, July 5-6, 2002
This workshop sponsored jointly by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), the International Economic Association (IEA) and the World Bank was held in Kampala, Uganda, in July 2002.
It provided a forum for discussing various important issues involved in post-conflict economies, with emphasis on African countries. Several of these countries have experienced the cessation of major conflicts and, sooner or later, others will follow suit. It was important, therefore, to address the issue of the aftermath.
How can the risk of resurgence of these conflicts be minimized?
How do we optimally chart out the conflict-to-peace transition period?
What are the roles of ethnicity and governance in these conflicts?
How does an understanding of these roles assist us in fostering an enduring peace?
It was attempted to answer these and other related questions. Various issues were explored in several framework papers. A set of country case studies was, then, drawn from Africa to complement the framework papers.
The papers emanating from this workshop are to be published in a volume by Palgrave (MacMillan).
